The Borghese Gallery

This is the Roman Museum you shouldn’t miss.

Many people think the Vatican Museum is the only must. They are quite wrong.

Located amidst the greenery of the favourite public park of the Romans, the Borghese Gallery is an authentic artistic treasure chest, the result of the passion for art of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who in the early 1600s had the villa built on the suburban property donated to him by his uncle, Pope Paul V, with the specific purpose of housing his art collection. In order to enjoy it fully, it is important to enter the villa with a perception of the surrounding park and open air in a wonderful blend of art and nature, that we now recognize as typical of Rome. Once again, as at the Vatican Museums, we find the correspondence between the “container” and what it “contains”, in which the artistic value of the individual works is enhanced by the decorative splendour of the rooms in which they are displayed. It is important to bear in mind that the Borghese Gallery originated as a private collection and that the works and their display are not the result of didactic criteria (period, subject), but rather reflect the taste and intentions of its former owners. Do not miss the series of sculptures made for the cardinal by young Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Eneas, the Rape of Proserpine, Apollo and Daphne, and David), that seem to invite us to participate in what is happening to them, Titian’s Sacred and Profane Love, Caravaggio’s masterpieces and the lovely Princess Paolina Borghese, Napoleon’s favourite sister, portrayed by Canova as Venus. The Borghese Cardinal was famous above all for his capacity to discover new talents and for his methods in acquiring the works of art he wished to own, which on some occasions were not exactly lawful. He did not hesitate to have the Deposition by Raphael stolen from a church in Perugia and he had painter Domenichino imprisoned because he did not want to give him a painting commissioned to him by another cardinal.

Rome: why the Vatican Area?

There are several reasons to choose the Vatican Area (called Prati district) for your stay in Rome, being in the city centre but a little outside the confusion and crowds.

The first thing to consider is the vicinity to several important monuments and sites. You can begin with the amazing St. Peter’s Square, visit the biggest church in the world (St. Peter’s Basilica) and then climb on top of the Michelangelo Cupola admiring the view of Rome. After, maybe not immediately after (since you have climbed a lot of steps to reach the top of the Cupola) you can visit the Vatican Museums. If it is not terribly crowded you can enjoy the Sistine Chapel at the end of your tour and see where the Pope’s are elected. Leaving the Vatican Museums you can definitely take the direction of Sant’Angelo Castle and enter the fortress (very interesting inside). Leaving the Castle you can pass the Dell’Angelo Bridge (admiring the statues on the sides on the bridge) and jump in the Navona Square Area.

The second reason is that the Prati District is more airy and less crowded than other parts of the city centre. Here you have large roads, many shopping streets (Via Cola di Rienzo just to mention the most known), and a lot of non touristy restaurants. If you skip the ones right besides the Vatican museums you have a large choice of Pizzerie, Trattorie and bars where you can eat without spending a fortune.

The third reason is the Borgo District, a nice small area right between St. Peter’s Square and Sant’Angelo Castle where you can enjoy a relaxed and charming atmosphere in a true roman environment.

Last but not least, is the wide choice of accommodations you have in this area. Several good bed and breakfasts, independent apartments and residences with a really good quality/price ratio. You are going to spend at least the 20% less than in other parts of the city.
It is enough that you have a look into the Vatican section of our website to understand how many good solutions there are for your stay in this area.
See:

So, if you are concerned about which area to choose for your stay in Rome, the Vatican Area could be an option you should seriously consider.
